Carl Junction High School is introducing a new winter sport this November: girls swim team. Practices will start on November 6 and go until the state swim meet on February 17-18. The team will share a head coach with Joplin’s swim team for the first year. They will also practice with the Joplin swim team at MSSU Monday through Friday. The addition of the swim team will approximately cost $15,000 per year.

There has been an interest for a girls swim team for several years. Assistant Principal Coach Wall was first approached about the team by some parents. This led to research about swimming as a sport and trying to figure out the logistics of a facility to use and coaches. There was also a census that had to be conducted to see how many girls would be interested in joining the team. The board approved the addition of the swim team in the spring of 2017. Wall says “The addition of a girls swim team gives the girls in the school another opportunity to compete and represent the school. The great part is that it doesn’t take girls away from other sports.” The biggest complication with adding a swim team was finding a facility to use for practices and finding a coach. Once those were figured (by using MSSU’s pool and sharing a coach the Joplin) out the rest of it fell into place. Be sure to come out and support the Lady Bulldogs swim team for their first season ever!
