The girls tennis team had a great start to their 2017 season. They started practice about two weeks before school started, with their home matches and practices held at the Joplin Athletic Complex. The varsity team consists of seniors Bailee Lassiter, Hannah Hodson, Laken Lee, Lily Pile, Taylor Niemeyer and sophomore Abby Hodson. One of their most important wins in their season was the meet against Carthage High School on September 11. With Districts slowly creeping up, the team did their best to prepare and be able to go serve the teams at Districts and pave their way to State. Manager, Joe Wolf, said, “State will be very tough as a team, but we may be able to get some individuals to that level.”

On September 25, the beginning of Districts, the team was ready to do as well as they possibly could. Sadly, though, the team was not able to prevail. When asked about how he thought the team did, Mr. Neldeberg said, “Our girls played well and every match was competitive.” He also said, “Lily Pyle and Abby Hodson played a very tough match against a doubles team from Ray-Pec [Raymond-Peculiar] that could end up being the State champs this year. I was proud of how every one of them played at the tournament.  It’s been a great season, and we will definitely miss our seniors next year.” It’s obvious that the girls played very well despite their loss. Now, we will have to wait until next season to, hopefully, watch them go even farther than they did this year.
