Archers Shoot Down the World

Local Archery Teams Go to Worlds

The Carl Junction archery team, as well as other local teams, recently shot at the NASP World Tournament on July 22 in both Bullseye and 3D competitions. The Bullseye competition consisted of the archers shooting at a target face with multiple rings where the rings increase in point value as they get smaller. The 3D competition consisted of the archers shooting at life size solid foam animal targets at varying distances. As everyone hoped, the trip to the World Tournament was a major success.

The Carl Junction team placed second in the 3D competition and third in the Bullseye competition. In the 3D tournament, current senior, Frankie Goforth, placed third in the overall girls category and graduated senior, Steven Mann, placed ninth in overall boys. The Sarcoxie archery team placed first in the 3D competition and second in the bullseye competition. Caleb Stillians, graduated senior from Sarcoxie, placed fourth in overall boys in 3D. Also, Chris Lingenfelter, who is a graduated senior from Sarcoxie, placed third in the bullseye competition and sixth in the 3D competition.  In addition to this, the Carthage team placed ninth in bullseye but didn’t compete in the 3D competition.  When all three teams returned from the World Tournament, decorated with multiple medals, they were met with very proud families and communities. “It’s awesome how the three teams were able to represent the southwest Missouri so well on a global scale,” said Coach Leggett, the head coach of the Carl Junction archery program.

The journey to Worlds was not an easy one for any of the teams, but with the community and all three teams working together, it was made easier. Our Carl Junction team joined together with the Carthage archery team to fundraise and practice for the World Tournament. It began with the teams qualifying at the District, State, and National Tournaments to finally reach the World Tournament. After qualifying came almost two months of fundraising. These fundraisers included a car wash, a raffle for multiple firearms and a Yeti cooler, and many other generous donations from local businesses.

After a season of nearly eight months, all three archery teams are finally able to relax, take a breather, and start preparing again for this next season. “We had a fantastic season last year and we look to repeat or improve on our World Tournament debut.  We have an incredible group of students and I am always proud to travel with them,” said Mrs. Friel, the assistant coach for the highschool team. Our Carl Junction team will start with one of their fundraisers later this month that will help with dues and equipment costs for the archers. They would love for everyone to come and have a good time. Even if you don’t, make sure you keep your eyes on the Carl Junction Archery Team in this upcoming season, and come out to support them!
